Dashboard Calculations
The Dashboard summarizes the selected portfolio, folder, or group of portfolios. This guide explains what each displayed amount means and how it is calculated.
Reporting Period
The shared Period and As-of controls set the requested reporting range. Changing a reporting date in Dashboard, Performance, Positions, Transactions, Value, or Cash updates the same context everywhere, including PDF reports. Positions uses the As-of date as its requested snapshot date.
If the selected portfolio data begins after the requested start date, the Dashboard moves the displayed start date forward to the earliest available date. The actual date range appears below the Dashboard heading and above the Portfolio Value chart.
Tax Lots keeps a separate realized-date range because it represents a tax-specific question rather than the general reporting period.
When a folder or other multi-portfolio selection is displayed:
- Dollar amounts are generally added across the included portfolios.
- Positions with the same symbol are combined.
- Portfolio returns are combined using each portfolio's ending value as its weight.
- Daily chart values are added by date before chart calculations are performed.
Summary Tiles
Total Value
Total Value is the combined ending value of the selected portfolios for the reporting period.
Total Value = sum of each portfolio's ending value
The smaller amount below it is the change between the first and last portfolio values available in the Portfolio Value chart:
Value Change = latest displayed portfolio value - first displayed portfolio value
This value change includes the effect of deposits and withdrawals. It is therefore not the same as Investment Gain/Loss.
Period Return
The main percentage is the Time Weighted Return (TWR) supplied by the portfolio return calculation. TWR is intended to measure investment performance while reducing the effect of the timing and size of external cash flows.
The smaller percentage is the Money Weighted Return (MWR). MWR reflects both investment performance and the timing and size of cash flows.
For multiple portfolios, each return is weighted by ending portfolio value:
Combined Return = sum of (portfolio return x portfolio ending value) / total ending value
Investment Gain/Loss
Investment Gain/Loss is the portion of the period's value change that remains after net external cash flows are removed.
Investment Gain/Loss = Ending Value - Beginning Value - Net Inflows
The value is added across all selected portfolios. The smaller percentage shown below the tile is the total displayed value change divided by the first displayed portfolio value:
Displayed Value Change % = Value Change / First Displayed Value
Because that percentage includes cash flows, it is not a rate-of-return calculation.
Net Inflows
Net Inflows are contributions less withdrawals during the reporting period.
Net Inflows = Contributions - Withdrawals
A positive amount means more money entered the portfolio than left it. A negative amount means withdrawals exceeded contributions.
Cash
Cash is the combined market value, as of the reporting end date, of positions whose symbol is CASH or $CASH.
Cash = sum of current cash-position values
The percentage below the amount is:
Cash % = Cash / Total Value
Realized Gains
Realized Gains are the sum of gains and losses from tax lots sold during the current calendar year.
Realized Gains = Current-Year Short-Term Gains + Current-Year Long-Term Gains
This tile uses the current tax year, regardless of the period selected at the top of the Dashboard.
What Changed Your Balance
The balance bridge reconciles the selected period's beginning and ending portfolio values. It separates external cash flows from the result produced by the investments:
Ending Value = Beginning Value + Net Inflows + Investment Gain/Loss
- Net contributions are shown when contributions exceeded withdrawals.
- Net withdrawals are shown when withdrawals exceeded contributions.
- Investment Gain/Loss includes the period's investment result. Dividend income is not shown as a separate bridge component because it is already included in this result.
The Dashboard and generated PDF use the same shared calculation and narrative. If the source values do not reconcile within the rounding tolerance, the bridge displays a data-check message rather than adjusting one of the reported components.
Dashboard Heading Highlights
Largest Holding
Non-cash positions with the same symbol are combined first. The holding with the greatest current market value is then selected.
Holding Weight = Combined Symbol Value / Total Value
Largest Exposure
Current position values are grouped by sector, with cash treated as its own sector. The group with the greatest value is the Largest Exposure.
Sector Exposure % = Sector Value / Total Value
Largest Active
Largest Active is the non-cash, classified sector whose portfolio weight differs most from the configured benchmark.
Active Weight = Portfolio Sector Weight - Benchmark Sector Weight
A positive value is an overweight and a negative value is an underweight. Cash and unclassified holdings remain in the portfolio total; they are not redistributed among the classified sectors.
Profile Coverage
Profile Coverage is the portion of the portfolio's current value represented by holdings with available security-profile data, such as sector and style classification.
Profile Coverage % = Value of Holdings With Profile Data / Total Portfolio Value
Look-Through Coverage
Look-Through Coverage is the portion of the portfolio represented by the available top-ten holdings of exchange-traded funds. It shows how much of the portfolio can be included in the X-Ray security-exposure view; it is not a full fund-holdings disclosure.
Look-Through Coverage % = Sum of (ETF Value × Available Top-Ten Holding Weight) / Total Portfolio Value
Portfolio Value Chart
The Portfolio Value chart combines daily records from all selected portfolios by date.
- Portfolio Value: Sum of each portfolio's closing value for the date.
- Net Inflows: Sum of contributions less withdrawals for the date.
- Daily Investment Gain/Loss: Daily change in value less that day's net inflows.
- Cumulative Gain/Loss: Running total of Daily Investment Gain/Loss across the displayed period.
The daily calculation uses the recorded Change in Value when it is available:
Daily Investment Gain/Loss = Recorded Change in Value - Net Inflows
If no recorded Change in Value is available, the Dashboard uses:
Daily Investment Gain/Loss = Closing Value - Opening Value - Net Inflows
The amount at the bottom right of the chart is the latest displayed Portfolio Value less the first displayed Portfolio Value. It includes both investment results and cash flows.
Investment Performance Chart
The Investment Performance chart shows compounded daily investment returns for the selected portfolio group and its benchmark. A portfolio uses its configured benchmark, defaulting to the S&P 500 represented by SPY. A folder uses the shared benchmark when every selected portfolio has the same benchmark symbol; otherwise it uses the S&P 500 / SPY default.
For each day with a positive opening value:
Daily Portfolio Return = Daily Investment Gain/Loss / Opening Value
Daily returns are compounded rather than added:
New Cumulative Return = (1 + Previous Cumulative Return) x (1 + Daily Return) - 1
Benchmark daily returns use adjusted prices, which account for distributions and applicable corporate actions:
Daily Benchmark Return = Current Adjusted Price / Previous Adjusted Price - 1
When Relative Performance is enabled, the chart displays:
Relative Performance = Portfolio Cumulative Return - Benchmark Cumulative Return
A positive relative result means the portfolio outperformed the benchmark by that many percentage points over the displayed period. A negative result means it underperformed.
Return Comparison
Return Comparison displays three period returns:
- TWR: Time Weighted Return supplied by the portfolio return calculation.
- MWR: Money Weighted Return supplied by the portfolio return calculation.
- Benchmark: Adjusted-price return from the beginning of the reporting period through the end.
The benchmark calculation is:
Benchmark Return = Ending Adjusted Price / Beginning Adjusted Price - 1
For a multi-portfolio selection, TWR and MWR are weighted by ending portfolio value.
Allocation
Non-cash positions are first combined by symbol and then grouped by sector. Cash is added as a separate allocation category.
Allocation % = Category Value / Total Value
The allocation list shows all categories sorted from greatest to least value. When the doughnut chart has more than six categories, it shows the five largest categories and combines the remainder into Other.
Largest Holdings
Positions with the same symbol are combined across the selected portfolios. The five symbols with the greatest current market value are displayed.
For each holding:
Holding Value = sum of current market value for the symbol
Holding Weight = Holding Value / Total Value
Unrealized Gain/Loss = Holding Value - Cost Basis
Unrealized Gain/Loss % = Unrealized Gain/Loss / Cost Basis
Tax Preview
Tax Preview separates current-calendar-year realized gains into Short Term and Long Term amounts.
- A tax lot explicitly marked short term is classified as Short Term.
- A tax lot explicitly marked long term is classified as Long Term.
- If no holding-period label is available, a lot held for 365 days or fewer is treated as Short Term; a longer holding period is treated as Long Term.
The Current Year Realized Gains total is:
Short-Term Realized Gains + Long-Term Realized Gains
The Unrealized Gain/Loss amount uses current non-cash positions:
- For a long position:
Current Market Value - Cost Basis - For a short position:
Current Value - Signed Cost, where signed Cost is the negative of the opening short-sale proceeds.
When the position snapshot does not provide short-sale proceeds, Rover Portfolio reconstructs them from the sell transactions represented by the remaining short quantity. If neither source is available, its gain figures and portfolio gain totals are shown as N/A.
Unrealized gains are shown for context but are not included in the Current Year Realized Gains total.
The Tax Lots view and PDF report extend this preview with a factual tax-posture summary:
- Open Losses is the absolute total of negative unrealized gains across open tax lots. Positive open lots are excluded from this figure.
- Largest potential loss-harvesting candidate is the single open lot with the largest unrealized loss. It identifies a lot for review; it is not a recommendation or an estimate of tax savings.
- Near Long Term counts short-term open lots scheduled to pass 365 days of ownership within the next 90 days as of the selected end date.
These figures do not estimate a tax bill. Tax rates, wash-sale rules, account type, and the investor's broader tax circumstances are intentionally not modeled.
Recent Activity
Recent Activity shows the six most recent trade or cash records within the displayed reporting period. When multiple portfolios are selected, the Portfolio column identifies the source portfolio.
The Amount uses the transaction's recorded proceeds when available. If proceeds are not available, the Dashboard estimates the amount from quantity and price:
- Buy amounts are shown as negative cash flow.
- Sell amounts are shown as positive cash flow.
- Cash deposits and withdrawals use their recorded cash amount.
Display Conventions
- Positive amounts and returns are shown using the positive color.
- Negative amounts and returns are shown using the negative color.
- Currency and percentage decimal places follow the application's precision settings.
- Missing or unavailable numeric values are treated as zero for Dashboard totals.
The Dashboard is a summary view. The Performance, Positions, Transactions, Value, Cash, and Tax Lots views provide the detailed records behind these calculations.
