Settings Persistence

Rover Portfolio remembers some choices permanently, some only for the current browser tab, and some only while the current app view remains open. This guide explains what to expect when changing portfolios, changing top tabs, refreshing the page, or returning later.

The Three Memory Levels

Remembered across sessions

These preferences are saved in the browser and are restored after a page refresh or browser restart:

  • Last selected top tab
  • Light or dark mode
  • Quantity, amount, price, and percentage precision
  • PDF checkup thresholds for adviser accounts
  • Deleted Portfolio Backup setting
  • Display name and user number, after they are changed from Edit Profile
  • Last selected portfolio or folder in the sidebar, if it still exists
  • Table sort choices
  • Group By choices
  • Positions: Include Cash
  • Transactions: Trades/Cash/All and Show Gain
  • Tax Lots: Realized/Open view

These settings are associated with this site in the current browser profile. Clearing the site's browser data resets them to their defaults.

Remembered for the current browser tab

The shared reporting period is saved for the life of the current browser tab. It survives top-tab changes and page refreshes, but normally resets after that browser tab is closed:

  • Dashboard, Performance, Positions, Transactions, Value, Cash, and PDF reports share one reporting period and As-of date. Changing the date or period in any of these views changes it in the others.
  • The existing per-view date values are retained and synchronized with the shared reporting context.
  • Dashboard Relative Performance remains specific to the Dashboard.
  • Tax Lots From/To dates remain independent because they describe a tax-specific realized-date range.

A newly opened browser tab starts with the default session values, while durable preferences such as theme and sorting are shared with other tabs.

Temporary view state

Temporary controls are not written to browser storage. They reset on a fresh page load or app session. Because top-tab views are cached while the app is open, some temporary state can remain when briefly switching away and back.

Examples include:

  • Transactions symbol filter
  • Expanded Value detail rows
  • Open dialogs, menus, editing state, and unsaved form entries
  • Sidebar folder expansion and collapse state
  • Sidebar width

The Transactions symbol filter is intentionally not saved across reloads or sessions. Switching to Cash clears it. If its selected symbol is no longer available for the current date/type display, it also clears automatically.

Changing Portfolios

Most table preferences are view-wide, not portfolio-specific. For example, choosing Group By: Sector in Positions means the same grouping is used when another portfolio is selected. The shared reporting context also applies across portfolio selections within the browser-tab session.

The important exception is the Tax Lots Cost Basis method. It belongs to the selected portfolio and is saved through the portfolio service.

Changing portfolios reloads the displayed portfolio data. Remembering a sort, grouping, or date range does not mean the table data itself is being kept stale.

Resetting Choices

  • Change an individual control to update its remembered value.
  • Close the browser tab to reset current-tab date and reporting-range choices.
  • Refresh the page to clear temporary view state.
  • Clear this site's browser data to reset durable browser preferences as well as current-tab settings.

Clearing browser data does not remove portfolios or the saved sidebar tree, because those are maintained by the portfolio service.

It does remove a profile saved through Edit Profile. Afterward, Rover Portfolio returns to the display name and user number supplied by appConfig.json (or the configured environment fallback).

Clarity for the decisions that shape your portfolio.
